The Reality of Darkness
It doesn’t take long to see how dark the world can be. We see it in the news: wars erupting, violence increasing, families torn apart, and people living in fear and confusion. The darkness isn’t just “out there”—it’s also personal. It shows up in depression, anxiety, loneliness, broken relationships, and the battles we face within our own hearts.
In moments like these, people question, “Where is God?” But the truth is—Jesus never forces His light into the world. He shines where He is welcomed, where hearts cry out for Him.

Light Revealed in Dark Places
Jesus had a habit of revealing Himself most clearly in the darkest settings.
• At Caesarea Philippi
This city was infamous for pagan worship, immorality, and even human sacrifice. Yet it was here that Jesus asked His disciples, “Who do you say that I am?” (Matthew 16:15). And Peter responded, “You are the Messiah, the Son of the Living God.” Why there, of all places? Because Jesus wanted to prove that His light could pierce the most hopeless, wicked places. If He could shine there, He could shine anywhere.
• On the Sea of Galilee
When His disciples fought a violent storm at sea, Jesus didn’t come at once. He waited until the “fourth watch of the night”—around 3 a.m., the darkest part of night—before walking on water and calming the waves (Matthew 14:25). Why wait so long? Because He wanted His disciples to understand that no matter how dark it gets, He is Lord over the storm.
• In a Prison, shackled with chains
Paul and Silas sang hymns at midnight in a prison cell (Acts 16:25). The chains fell off, and freedom came not only for them but for everyone around them.

God Walks With Us in Shadows
David wrote in Psalm 23:
“Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for You are with me.”
Notice David didn’t say “if” we walk through the valley—he said “when.” Darkness is a guarantee in life. But here’s the good news: God never leaves us there because he tells us we walk through. Shadows only exist where there’s light. Which means if you’re walking through shadows, God’s light is already near.
Some of the most powerful worship arises in the darkest seasons. When everything else is stripped away, when you have nothing left to cling to except Christ, your faith grows deeper.
Your midnight song, your whispered prayer in the valley of depression, your decision to trust God in grief—that’s light shining in the dark.

From Receiving Light to Being Light
Jesus doesn’t just call us to enjoy His light—He calls us to be the light.
“You are the light of the world.” (Matthew 5:14)
When you hold on to faith in hard times, people notice. When you refuse to let bitterness win, when you choose hope instead of despair, when you extend kindness in a world that thrives on cruelty—you become a beacon.
Our lives are not meant to be hidden under fear or doubt. Jesus calls us to shine, to live in such a way that others can’t help but see the difference and be drawn to Him – and if we ever needed more light in the world, it’s now!

Make me a beacon of hope for those who feel lost, that they may see You through me. Amen.
