“So, what do you do?”

It’s one of the first questions we ask when meeting someone new. It’s almost as automatic as chatting about the weather. But have you ever stopped to wonder why?

Usually, it’s not just small talk. It’s a subtle way of sizing someone up—trying to figure out if we relate to them, if they’re successful, or if they’re “worth our time.” We may not mean it that way, but in our culture, your job title can easily become your identity.

No wonder so many people tie their entire sense of self-worth to what they do. When we’re constantly being asked that question, it’s easy to believe that our value is found in our job, our success, our title, or our income.

So we work harder. We chase promotions. We try to sound impressive when asked, “What do you do?” But all of that—every title, every accolade, every dollar—can disappear in an instant. And when it does, many are left asking, “Who am I now?”

Stripped Down to What Really Matters

If your identity is rooted in your job, what happens when that job ends?

If your value comes from your talent or skill, what happens when that ability fades?

If your sense of worth is found in how much you earn, what happens when the money runs out?

That’s usually when the identity crises shows up. Because what we do is not the same as who we are.

Jesus taught again and again that our identity should not be found in what we accomplish, but in who we belong to. We are not ultimately defined by our roles, careers, or abilities—we are defined by our relationship with Him.

You Are a Child of God

The Bible reminds us that our identity is rooted in Christ alone. “You are all children of God through faith in Christ Jesus.” (Galatians 3:26)

If you lose your job—Christ still lives in you.

If you lose your skill—Christ still lives in you.

If you lose your platform or popularity—Christ still lives in you.

When everything else falls away, your identity in Christ is unshakable.

What Lasts Forever

“The grass withers and the flowers fall, but the word of our God endures forever.” (Isaiah 40:8)

…and His enduring word says that  “…Nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.”

— Romans 8:38–39

Jobs fade. Money runs out. Status changes.

But your identity in Christ? It’s eternal.

When we get to heaven, no one will ask what you did for a living. No one will care if you were a stockbroker, a schoolteacher, or a stay-at-home parent. What matters is who you belonged to. That’s the only thing that lasts.

A Global Family

And here’s the beautiful part: when your identity is in Christ, you’re part of something bigger than yourself. You’re joined to a family of believers all over the world. It may be the only thing a Wall Street executive shares with a widow in a village in India, or a farmer in Iowa with a mother in Nigeria—but it’s the greatest thing to share: Jesus.

That shared identity is deeper than culture, language, or background. It unites us. It gives us belonging.

Prayer

God, I confess how easy it is to place my identity in what I do instead of who I am in You. Help me remember that I am first and foremost Your child—not defined by my career, accomplishments, or status. Anchor me in Your truth and remind me daily that Christ in me is the only title that lasts. Amen.
